Prayer is a preventative measure. It is not supposed to be the last resort.
We show that we humble ourselves when we pray.
Pray against things beforehand instead of after the problem has occurred.
If my people humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways He will help us.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
